Using analogue photographs animated by frame variation, Here Now There Then explores traumatic memory and the effect of nature. The work, repeated to echo recurring memory, offers the experiential process of an unnamed trauma being brought up in disjointed imagery and subsequently released, through proximity to a river.
Set in Eryri, Wales and Bristol, England, the river appears in black and white and the remembered trauma, namely the moments before it - a bicycle journey over a highway - in colour. Images are accompanied by spoken extracts from a narrative poem by the artist. The use of still photographs with narration to evoke memory references Chris Marker’s seminal film La Jetée (1962).
