Gina Soden
Sodens series Reclamation focuses on nature’s triumph as plants, trees, moss and mould regain spaces. The absence of human life is profoundly felt in industrial, institutional and often solitary environments. At the heart of this series is a duality between architectural prowess and the fallacy that humankind has any permanent control over nature. Soden laments capitalism insensitivity to its effect on abandoned people and places. We are offered a meditation on time, nature, industry and reclamation.
Carmelite, 202, Belgium.
This was photographed in an overgrown courtyard of an abandoned monastery, in Belgium.
I loved the way the cross seemed to be the only part that was still green, not quite caught by autumn just yet. Unfortunately this historical place will be demolished in the coming months.
Tessile, 2023, Italy.
This was photographed in an abandoned cotton mill in the north of Italy. It was absolutely huge and had a large river next to it where supplies and production would be loaded on and off barges. It was fantastic for photography as there was a lot of detail and nature taking over, as well as long vanishing points.
Idronatura, 2023, Italy.
Built at the start of the 20th century, this vast power plant was the main facility that produced calcium carbide. The plant endured many changes due to World War II and electricity laws, and competitors eventually forced the plant to close in the early 80's. After the closure the space was used for several movie sets. I have been here a few times and in recent years nature has really started to reclaim the space - some of the roof has come in now and water ingress and decay has really taken over.
Hotel Bedding 2023, Ireland.
Abandoned for 7 years, the level of decay is striking and fantastical, transforming the derelict space into a new natural paradise. This room contrasts with other areas of the building that remain untouched and pristine. The surreal image focuses on the push and pull in the tug of war between nature and mankind. Soden explains this space has all been ripped out now and under renovation. Torn as she is sad that the ecosystem here has been destroyed but happy as the building will be put back to good use.
Reclaimed Leisure, 2023, Italy.
An abandoned swimming pool which was part of a leisure complex, reclaimed by nature with roof tiles smashed and plants and moss growing all around and in it.
